This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and to develop assessment tools used to guide the collection of quality evidence, including their application in formative, summative and recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment. It applies to experience practitioners responsible for the development and/or delivery of training and assessment products and services.

Context & Details

This unit supports the requirement for RTOs to provide reliable, quality assessment. That’s why it has been included as a core unit in the newly released TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. As a vocational trainer, you will need to design assessment tools that uphold the integrity of Australia’s vocational education system, and that is what the unit TAEASS502 Design and develop assessment tools is all about.

Because we already have the newest TAE50216 Diploma of Training Design & Development on our scope of registration, RMT is able to offer the newest Diploma level TAE units, including TAEASS502. When you complete your TAEASS502 unit with River Murray Training, we will issue you with a Statement of Attainment for the latest version.

This training covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to design and develop assessment tools, including tools used in formative, summative and recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment. An assessment tool is used to guide the collection of quality evidence in the assessment process. It includes the specific instruments for collecting evidence, as well as information about assessment methods and the procedures to be followed in conducting the assessment.

Entry Requirements

Although there are no explicit entry requirements, it is assumed that participants hold or are working towards a TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, relevant Diploma or a related Skill Set. The course provides a professional development (PD) opportunity for qualified trainers and assessors.

This course typically applies to those with a practicing knowledge of training and assessment, and experience in assessment strategies and processes.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Candidates with relevant experience may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Please contact us prior to enrolment if you believe you fit the criteria for RPL.

Course Content

  • Design and develop at least three assessment tools to guide the collection of quality evidnece in a range of contexts, such as training/assessment and recognition pathways
  • Demonstrate how the tools have been reviewed and evaluated with respect to the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence
  • Provide a strong theoretical knowledge of how to design and develop tools for a variety of purposes

Course Delivery

Option 1 - Single Day Workshop

One day Accelerated Workshop, delivered in the enterprise workplace to groups of 4-10 individuals.

  • Pre-reading, learning and knowledge based activities
  • Single day of intensive face to face learning and practical assessment activities
  • Post session assessment work if required

This delivery mode provides accelerated learning to confident trainers and assessors. The learning is broken into chunks, with the most difficult concepts facilitated by a specialist RMT Trainer. Assessment will be completed both at the workshop and in the workplace.

Option 2 - Two Day Workshop

Two Day Workshop, delivered in the workplace to groups of 4-10 individuals.

This delivery method incorporates the One Day Workshop with an additional day to consolidate learning and address practical assessment requirements, reducing the amount of time required for further post course assessment.

It is recommended for trainers with less experience in delivery and assessment, or those who are new to the role.

Option 3 - Facilitated On-Line Learning

This self-managed delivery mode is undertaken at home or in the workplace. All materials can be downloaded in an easy-to-use Microsoft Word format, or are available in print format.

Course requirements are typically completed over six weeks, with a weekly online tutorial 1:1 with your facilitator.

Additional support is available via phone, email and our online e-learning centre.
